Heather Bellamy spoke with The Christian Institute, about the Joint Committee on Human Rights report on the Government's approach to countering extremism and how the legislation could be over, before it's even begun.

Ciaran: I think that the primary reason for that is because it lacks a clear definition as to what extremism is. That definition is going to have to be central to the legislation.
They've said that they were going to hold consultation and that they are looking for input with that. It would be almost impossible to give some serious responses to a consultation that isn't clear on what it's actually trying to achieve.
Heather: What do you hope will happen next?
Ciaran: I would hope that the Government would recognize that they haven't thought this through at all. I think that they should sit down, look at the existing legislation that is in place and ask themselves the serious question, 'Is there any gap here for us to deal with?' I think the answer to that is no and if they conclude that the answer is no, then this legislation is over before it has started.
