There’s a book out in the States which succinctly nails the lie that life is an accidental collision of atoms and that we were created and designed for a purpose. That best seller, Rick Warren’s The Purpose Driven Life, has now been turned into an album. It has to be observed that Nashville are now churning out far too many of these albums-inspired-by-the-book projects and that many of the singers here are unknown by all save their mums and session fixers who book recording work. But worry not! Lyndsey Lloyd Wallace, Jill Zadeh, Adam Watts and Vaneese Thomas all have excellent chops and stand up very well against the CCM stars (Kevin Max, Nicole C Mullen, Take 6, Natalie Grant) on offer here. The songs were written and produced by all manner of people so there’s no real stylistic coherence apart from the lyrical themes but Kevin Max’s guitar crunching “Just An Illusion” and Natalie Grant’s stirring ballad “My Soul In Your Hands” are both memorable. Maybe you’ll want to investigate particularly if the book connected with you.
