R&B star Mariah Carey brings gospel music element into latest stage show
THE LATEST issue of Q magazine carries a report of the recent concert at New York's Madison Square Garden for best selling R&B singer Mariah Carey. The review commented on the star's revealing dress (sequined black bra top and hot pants) and the singer's desire to "shake a little booty" but was bemused by Mariah's gospel section. The review read, "Only when Carey gets to God-bothering does she come unstuck. Backed by a 30-strong black gospel choir in white church robes, she launches into her recently minted spiritual 'Fly Like A Bird' but stops seconds into it. 'I'm not being a diva!' she exclaims. She is, astonishingly, waiting for her pastor, the Rev Dr Clarence Keaton of Brooklyn's True Worship Church, to arrive and deliver the song's mini-sermons, which he does, in full pulpit regalia, declaring: 'Joy comes in the morning. Trust him!'"
