Ancient recordings by Polk Miller & His South Quartette released on CD
ONE OF the earliest groups in recorded music history, Polk Miller & His South Quartette, are celebrated on a new CD release on Tompkins Square. In the 1880s banjo and guitar playing Polk assembled a bi-racial travelling group who performed vaudeville songs, banjo tunes, nostalgic dialect stories and gospel songs. The CD 'Polk Miller & His South Quartette' features all seven of the group's recordings released by Edison on cylinder in 1909. Included in the compilation are "Rise & Shine" and "What A Time".
