AT THE 25th year of Greenbelt Festival, celebrated at Deene Park on
28-31 August, more details were announced of its plans for 1999.
Greenbelt will continue as an event though one that is less youth
culture, less music-orientated. It will be held at Cheltenham
Racecourse on July 29-August 1 while a new event, Freestate, organised
jointly by Greenbelt and Spring Harvest, will be held on August 27-30.
Freestate, to be held at a venue soon to be announced, will be, in
their own words, "a groove-drenched, adrenaline-burning, life-giving
music weekender." Greenbelt Festival's manager Andy Thornton told
Cross Rhythms, "We've found that as Greenbelt goers get older there's
a desire to experience a broader range of arts. The new look Greenbelt
will explore all the arts, theatre, fine arts, and worship while
Freestate will be much more targeted at youth culture. Greenbelt will
be an arts festival while Freestate will be much more a music
festival."
