Troubadour Garth Hewitt goes to Nicaragua for update on CEPAD work.
SINGER/SONGWRITER Garth Hewitt recently returned from an Amos Trust
visit to Nicaragua. The trip was to renew links and update information
on Amos' partner CEPAD (Council Of Churches Relief And Development
Work). Said Hewitt, "The visit was a reminder of the importance of the
Trade Justice Movement. Most of the people are getting poorer and
poorer year by year, yet on the surface familiar stores are arriving
in Managua like McDonalds, and also new shopping malls. A few rich
people can use these but most people struggle to survive, working in
sweatshops or having to travel to Costa Rica for work. These are hard
times in Nicaragua and it has doubled our commitment to support our
partners there." Garth will be telling the story of this visit in a
concert tour later this year and Damaris Albuquerque (Director of
CEPAD) will be the keynote speaker at Amos Day on 2nd October 2004.
