Here's a surprise, if you've considered Christian feature films to be low on artistic merit and high on wince-inducing preachy bits after which the central character gets dramatically converted you're going to have to radically rethink your perspective if you search out this DVD. Telling the story of a dysfunctional Californian family held together by an amiable believer, James Wyler, the main focus of the film is his 16 year old brother, Bobby, a would-be punk and confused and frustrated young man. The other major characters are a gold-digging sister, Andrea, a drop-out drug casualty brother, Dennis and an attractive female lawyer trying to help the group reach a financial settlement after years of arguments over their deceased parents will. Although the movie demonstrates its Christian credentials a little too overtly on occasions (it's hardly surprising that Bobby finally caves in and lets Jesus into his life) what sets this apart from standard evangelical utilitarianism is the clever way in which humour is continually integrated into the storyline with the scene where Dennis goes to buy an electric fan being truly hilarious. The unknown cast are adequate (with Dennis, played by Brian Morvant, the clear standout) and the folky music score by Welsh musician, Andrew Griffiths, low key but appealing. Overall, the whole package, thanks largely to light-of-touch writing and direction from Chris Staron, is thoroughly enjoyable.

Product Description

For a dozen years, James has served as both big brother and surrogate parent, trusting God for help in raising his three siblings... and hoping for a date one day!

As youngest brother Bobby turns 16, everyone returns home to celebrate – and to finally find out how their parents’ money will be divided.

Andrea is hoping for more than her fair share; Dennis (make that The Dennis) just needs enough to keep the anarchists at bay; and nothing would please Bobby more than just to impress Liz, the new girl in school.

Mix in a hidden stash of cash, an attractive lawyer and the infamous War Table and you have a quirky story about family, faith and friendship.

Bringing Up Bobby reminds us that when life gets messy, you can still laugh – and look to God for direction.
