Newly established True Breed Records have chosen to use the latest album by experienced Texan hip-hop artist 5ive (real name Craig James) for its very first release and, thanks to the quality of the man's work, it's a decision that has paid off. A quick glance through 5ive's bio on his website reveals the miracle of his rescue at the hands of Jesus from a life blighted by severe addiction and the rapper is careful to use each track on this wide-ranging release to give glory to his Saviour whilst also encouraging the listener to venture into a deeper relationship with God. 5ive is ultimately a talented wordsmith and deliverer of rhyme and, as a result, his work really hits home - especially on candid numbers like the autobiographical "Power" and the anxiety-busting "Ain't Worried" which succeed in reaching deep into the soul. Elsewhere, the rapper deftly tackles hefty issues such as spiritual warfare and the futility of worldly fame in "They Know Us" and "No Rings" whilst a remake of a well-known Sunday school song in "This I Know" - featuring 5ive's heavily auto-tuned 13 year-old son Kyren Cyrill on vocals - provides a lighter moment. 5ive keeps matters musically varied with short diversions into gospel, soul and modern worship territories offering up an alternative to the usual hip-hop sounds whilst a sizeable roster of guest artists including V.Rose, SPEC, Datin, J Carter and Drew Weeks added further diversity to this accomplished offering.
