Having reviewed Ad-Apt's 'Broken Bones' EP, I was interested to see how this remix album would stack up against its source tracks. The answer? Not badly at all. Not quite featuring the kind of stylistic transformations that epitomise TobyMac's remix albums, 'Broken Bones: Remixes' does offer solid alternative interpretations of the rapper's original release. A particular standout for me is Tigga's dark remix of the title track, which mixes a chunky beat with some powerful synth bass to create a cut that manages to make its own statement outside the original. Meanwhile, "Guilty", one of my favourites from the original EP, gets a complete makeover from Debian Blak, who transforms the track from a smooth, soulful groove to a jittering, IDM-influenced, synthetic wash with a beat reminiscent of some of the late J Dilla's more experimental productions. All in all, this EP reminds the listener again of the talent existing in the Christian urban music underground.
