In 1999 I encountered a rather tasty dance single "Free Spirit" (credited to just Adesuwa) but it's taken 'til now for me to renew my musical acquaintance with this lady who once sang with the London Community Gospel Choir. Her husband Hugh is a vastly experienced muso who has played with the likes of Clapton and Hendrix and as co-producer of this set he provides his spouse with a slinkily sophisticated set of backdrops. The stacked vocal harmonies on the first two tracks "Trail Of Broken Hearts" and "Joy And Love" are particularly effective with Adesuwa's warm, expressive voice confidently flowing across the undulating grooves. I particularly enjoyed "The Universe Will Send Him To Me" with some flute and a jazzy vibe while in completely different mood "Unese Baba 'O" shows the sister hasn't lost her African roots. The best cut is the deftly funky "Never In A Month Of Sundays" with another delicious multi-tracked chorus while it was nice that they found room to put one of the "Free Spirit" mixes on the end of the album. A talented lady who deserves recognition on the UK scene.
