Odd really. I loved all those old Hi Records soul classics but ever since Al re-committed his life and his music to Christ his albums have been decidedly parky with one or two (his abysmal Christmas album) downright dreadful. It was a smart move for Word to link the Memphis reverend up with blue-eyed soul man and producer extraordinaire Tim Miner. Has it worked? Well, Al's getting more Christian music attention than he's had for years with Tim wisely giving rhythms funky enough to be contemporary but at least echoing the Golden Age when Willie Mitchell was Al's producer. The horn section throughout is white hot and on the stomping opener makes soulful noises indeed as Al does his usual purrs and vocal licks which influenced an age of soul singers. What holds the album back are Al's usual set of naff lyrics. Good in parts but hear it first
