Here's a superb bass voice, resonant, powerful and rich, in a highly enjoyable and varied programme of songs. Jones has won the bass solo section of the National Welsh Eisteddfod on seven occasions and this crystal clear recording shows why. When you hear him tackle a deceptively demanding song like the Paul Robeson classic "Deep River", you are hearing the full glory of a bass voice that almost rivals the great Robeson's. Material by Mozart, Handel and Verdi is included, with a specially powerful performance of the latter's "II Lacerato Spirito". "I'se Weary Of Waitin'" is movingly conveyed, as is the lovely old evergreen, also a Robeson gem, "Just A-Wearyin' For You". This is the first recording of a fine, cultured artist who performs impeccably throughout.
