There can be a tendency when discussing singer/songwriters to focus almost exclusively on the lyrical rather than the musical. The content of the words, and the passion with which they are conveyed, is often deemed more important than the music within which they are framed. While this is some truth in this perspective I am of the opinion that great singer/songwriters are distinguished by the skilful marriage of both insightful lyrics and memorable melody - the singing and the song. Think Jeff Buckley or Nick Drake. Canada's Amanda Falk has already attracted the attention of Cross Rhythms (you can read about her in an article published earlier this year). This third release from the highly talented lady exemplifies the delicate relationship between strong words and strong music. Although overall, 'In Between The Now And Then' could be dubbed rock-oriented pop it's the inventive arrangements here where Falk's creativity truly shines. The string part on "Unbreakable", the halftime breakdown on "Landslide", the entrance of the cello at the beginning of "We Will Wait" and the way "Horizon" undulates in spacious dynamics, all draw and hold the listener. The album is littered with these perfectly crafted moments. While the words themselves speak volumes; from the heartfelt worship of "Redemption" and "Horizon", to the hope for better days conveyed on "We Will Wait". Amanda Falk has succeeded on all counts with this remarkably beautiful album.
