From the outset there is an understated power to this Detroit-based rock duo as they deliver these three tracks of post-hardcore art-rock. Layered harmonies and choppy guitars produce a satisfyingly chunky sound that takes over your speakers and purrs for the full 10 minutes of this EP. Having been around for about five years, American Arson have developed a mature and aggressive sound that reminds me at times of an early Anberlin or House Of Heroes. "Rise" kicks off the EP with some melodic gang shouts before Evan Baker's edgy vocals dominate and soar with power over the refrain, "The gates of hell shall not prevail." This echoes and repeats in a rhythmical fashion. "&" tones things down a little with a more reflective lilt before "Fall" returns to an aggressive, drum-tight closer. Throughout the recording, production is crystal clear, matching the sharp instrumentation and overall package. The only problem I find with this recording is its length, which is far too short. As an EP it could quite easily be overlooked, but as one of the best commercial rock sounding recording I have heard in a long time I will now be keeping an eye out for more of this band's material. It really is not to be missed.
