The latest release from the LA-based blue-eyed gospel singer is an absolute whirlwind of sound and soul. Drawing on a range of classic gospel material, including a song written by the album's producer Kurt Carr, Rushes presents a musically proficient album of gospel praise. The energetic "It's Good To Give Thanks And Praise" starts off the album as it means to go on, followed by the title track lead single, while slower numbers like "You Can Make it" and "No Other Name But Jesus" provide a nice change of pace. Kurt Carr's fingerprints are all over the album, and his slick production work is superb. Likewise, the musicians provide a solid foundation for Rushes' vocals. However, while this is the case, the songs occasionally fall into the trap of being perfectly arranged and performed, while simultaneously not being particularly memorable. And while Rushes' vocal work is skilful, her voice sometimes simply doesn't have the power required to match the energy and richness of the accompaniments music. These reservations aside, 'Testify' definitely has its moments.
