Ambient music made up of a single long track is not new in music history, for example Tubular Bells (Mike Oldfield) and numerous prog releases by Pink Floyd and Tangerine Dream also come to mind. What makes this different is that this hour-long piece is based on maths. The various colours of the rainbow are given a musical phase, for example red comprises of one note, orange two and so on. These are overlaid with soundscapes representing sun, the earth rotating around the sun and the rain. Sounds complicated? Yes, but it is clever once you grasp what has gone into it. Scotland's Andrew (who many will know under his recording name Calamateur) originally released a version of this as a freebie in 2011 with the 'The Quiet In The Land' set. For this remix Andrew quotes Brian Eno and Moby as influences and something of their sound is apparent here. To the casual listener, most of this will probably pass them by. The title may also confuse as there is no singing! What remains however, is a creative, thought provoking piece of work.
