Although I've been aware of Andrew Osenga's impressive Christian music history - formerly the lead singer of The Normals, taking over from Derek Webb when that singer/songwriter left Caedmon's Call, and releasing a stream of solo albums extending as far back as 2002 - I have only recently got up close and intimate with Andrew's music. 'Heart' was issued in 2015 as the first of four EPs, the others being 'Soul', 'Flesh' and the still-to-be-released 'Bone'. Each EP follows a somewhat different musical direction and this one can broadly be described as stripped-down acoustic singer/songwriter. It is, in my estimation, absolutely brilliant and has now become a must-listen-to item on the Cummings stereo. The quality of Andrew's songwriting is breathtaking and two songs, "Until You Provide" - a plaintive narrative composition portraying the hopes and frustrations of an unemployed man trying to keep providing for his family - and "The House Where No One Spoke" which artfully deals with the human desire to feel some control over situations when in fact we have no control. If, like me, you've been slow to recognise that Mr Osenga is one of America's great songsmiths, this EP is a perfect place to start your education.
