If you think that music made by Christians should simply be a matter of love and grace and bunnies and kittens without the real world ever impinging on proceedings then this gritty album isn't the thing for you. Yorkshire-based singer Doonan has teamed up with poet-turned-lyricist Rob Dunsire to create the songs on 'Lights & Mirrors'. Aimed firmly at a mainstream audience rather than a bunch of church folks, Doonan touches on a variety of subjects, amongst others - the life of an ordinary Joe on "Malcolm", the isolation of suicide ("Jenny") and life sucking relationships ("The Hell That Heaven Hides") and the pace of modern life ("City Slickers"). These are thought provoking songs that cause the listener to ask questions and reflect on life rather than songs that point directly to God or explain answers. Dunsire's lyrics are at turns playful and cleverly constructed and Doonan's melodies and vocals bring the whole thing to life. Although not perfect, it's certainly a good way of launching a music career with this brisk poppy set of songs that are both memorable and compelling.
