If you've been a follower of Nashville CCM for a goodly while you may remember when Anthem Lights recorded full-on pop music and had radio hits with songs like "Circles". But over the years they've found a new niche within the Christian music world. They've given up on their original teen pop approach and instead have developed a sound where most of the emphasis is on switched lead and rich harmonies. Not quite acapella, there's usually Joey Stamper's piano to be heard; not really Southern gospel, it's a sound which is particularly appealing to older Christians. This set of worship song covers is highly impressive. "Yes I Will" is one of the very few songs with a bit of bass and drums as well as the always-present piano. Not that you'd notice. It's the group's acrobatic, high harmonies which drive their sound and with switched lead vocals and thoughtfully selected songs, the feel of worship is engaging and, in its own way, worshipful. You may think you've heard too many versions already of Redman's "10,000 Reasons" or Hughes' "Here I Am To Worship", but this hugely accomplished vocal team skilfully give them a new twist. I particularly enjoyed their medleys - Cory Asbury's "Reckless Love" fused to John Mark McMillan's "How He Loves Us", and Hillsong's "So Will I" melded to Laura Story's "Indescribable". If the idea of a set of worship song covers sounds a tad dull to you, you need to investigate what these skilful Nashville harmonisers do with them.
