Haydn's life spanned from pre-Mozart to the mid part of Beethoven's output - almost two musical generations - and his music to some extent reflects that period of change and questioning. The most famous Cantata (and longest, 17:56) on this recording "Arianna a Naxos" is handled beautifully by Arleen Auger and presented here in its orchestral version which Haydn never actually managed to produce! With the current vogue for authenticity maybe Chris Hogwood should've hunted around for a castrato - the Aria was first sung by the Italian castrato Pacchierotti ... Another highlight from the recording is the cantata Miseri No., Misera Paltria - describing the destruction of a city by pillaging troops and beautifully sung here by Ms. Auger. The Handel And Haydn Society Orchestra provide an accomplished accompaniment but I felt it was somewhat lacking in feeling. On the whole though, a very good and worthwhile recording of some of Haydn's most beautiful vocal works.
