All of this points to 1998's 'Modern'. Battered Fish have certainly grown and pulled out of the bag a tight rock'n'roll album. After the wonderful opening attack of "Wish", "Set Up" then explores the price of looking for solutions in the wrong places. Got to say that when this band get emotional, they really connect. "Sometimes" is an example of this where Caleb's voice and the introduction of a cello combine to create real atmosphere. My fave has to be "New Tragedy" with its jangly guitar and hooky chorus but overall there's much to enjoy here. Creative rock'n'roll which avoids tripping up on cliche.
