If you take the trouble to read the Time Tunnels feature in the esteemed pages of Cross Rhythms, and concentrate on the events of the 1990s, the name of Eden Burning will inevitably crop up sooner or later. They were one of the UK’s hardest gigging bands in those days, appearing at festivals all over the place, before they decided to call it a day after Greenbelt 96. All this came flooding back as I examined the sleeve of this professionally produced independent album, because not only did I see the name of FFG Studios, home of Eden Burning’s producer David Pick, but also the names of lead singer Paul Northup and guitarist and mouth harpist Charlotte Ayrton. Those who remember albums such as ‘Vinegar And Brown Paper’ and ‘Brink’ will know what to expect because Paul’s songwriting is as good as it was back then; instrumentally, however, ‘Nightlight’ is much removed from some of the Celtic-tinged stuff of years gone by. The songs themselves have an edgy quality, lyrically they are decidedly oblique, but careful listening will tell you all you need to know. A very good example of thinking person’s music. Well worth seeking out.
