Brian Courtney Wilson's first CD went to number two on the Billboard Gospel chart in the States. This one surpassed that early in 2012, topping both the Gospel and Christian charts and making number 44 in the mainstream charts, and now it gets British distribution. So what's the fuss about? He's gone from the raspy tones on that first set to a smooth tenor, partially reminiscent of Luther Vandross. The music is predominantly old school soul with gospel tones and '70s and early '80s inflections (albeit with inevitably more programmed keyboards). Yes, that does mean that slap bass is present and correct. The melodies are infectious, singable and - on the more up-tempo numbers - danceable. The chord changes on the ballad "Perfect" sound like Stevie Wonder. The lyrics are full of Christian encouragement ("He Still Cares"), exhortation ("Grab And Hold") and testimony ("One Day At A Time" - no, not that one - it's about his marriage). If there is any gripe, it is that the production sound is muddy in places where it could have more definition. But what can't be obscured is an outstanding talent. Barring disasters, I would be surprised if Wilson doesn't have a long and fruitful ministry.
