This album gets off to a promising start, despite the rose on the cover. In the opening track the mild melody in Cathy Wheeler's voice, backed by a strong guitar, recalls early Clannad in their more upbeat moments. The minor key suggests an indie leaning which is unusual and attractive. However, hopes that this is different from mainstream female CCM are dashed in the second track. Easy listening sets in and the keyboard line repeated throughout the title track gets irksome after a couple of plays. But lyrics are sensitive and thoughtful, particularly in the final song, "Eyes Of A Child", a haunting melody about healing for the abused. While failing to reach the heights of musical originality, this album will minister. The opening track "In The Doorway" proves the potential for a highly original sound, what's needed is the courage to stand out from the crowd. Wheeler's gentle voice is best when dusky, not reaching for the top of the scale. And perhaps the rose should go too.
