When I first asked what a ceili (ceilidh - Scottish spelling) was, a friend informed me that it is like a barn dance but a lot more raucous and exuberant, often popular at Gaelic wedding receptions. With so many melancholy expressions of religion about, the concept that Christ has made it out of the church building into a raucous Canaan wedding reception is one I love. Ceili Rain is a Celtic style band is led by America's Bob Halligan Jr who has the remarkable history of having written songs for the likes of Kiss and Judas Priest to Bob Carlise, Rebecca St James and (my favourite) the Wayne's World soundtrack! Sadly, that songwriting pedigree doesn't come over in these songs. Tracks like "That's All The Lumber You Sent" provide a parable set to a Celtic reel in the breaks, and a penny whistle in the verses. "666 Degrees" describes itself as a nice little song about Hell, with some fast fiddle playing. Although the sound mix may have been right on the night, as a live recording straight to DAT with no post-production, the instrument balance on the recording is poor and consistently muffled. There is even the occasional squeal of feedback to prompt the question if this quality of recording should have been released.
