Arguably the finest country singer/songwriter in Britain kicks off his new album with a nice autobiographical track "Further Down The Road". "Love You Every Second" is a very warm song before Charlie turns to gospel with the most attractive and thoughtful "Saints'". Then we have a weather warning "It's Raining Outside", before at long last we get a great rerecording of "God Knocking On Your Door" which I have always enjoyed and which was on Charlie's very first self produced gig tape which long since gave up the ghost for me! "The Twelfth Of Never" gets a tremendous and very emotional and effective reworking. Strange how an old Johnny Mathis pop hit continues to sit comfortably in country music. The remainder of the album are new originals by Charlie. "Uninvited", "I Want Someone Who Will Love Me" (and don't we all!), "The Green Hills Are Rolling Still", "Oh Nancy", before a strange conclusion with "In The Bleak Midwinter". All very nice, but if I want to play this album during next summer, would I still want to listen to Christmas music? That minor gripe aside, it's another great album from this fine Liverpudlian who is making big waves not only with his own band in decent theatres (a far cry from when I first saw him as a solo singer/songwriter) and whose wonderful music is picked up by all sorts of artists, including many from the UK Christian scene. Wonderful stuff.
