Hailing from way back in 1990, 'We Cast Out The Devil' is an abrasive experience. This Dutch, female-fronted punk-cum-industrial band offer a jagged soundscape where the drum machines, fierce guitar work and "metalized violin" put one in mind of the gloom and tension of Godflesh's first album. Lyrically, the album is typically punk and blunt but that's not to say there is no spiritual depth here. There's something strangely trance-inducing in the opening song's repetition of "666, 777", while track nine "Devil's Game - Supernatural Power" is a look at the struggles of day to day life and the genuine need for Christ's supernatural power to get through. The mix of instruments gives a sound that is clearly influenced by '80s new wave, and post-punk, but with plenty of nods to the then burgeoning industrial music genre. All in all, a challenging and fascinating glimpse at the Christian music underground of 1990.
