Citizens & Saints (formerly Citizens) have been making big waves in the Christian music world over the last couple of years with their unique style of high octane indie rock. Based in Seattle and formerly part of Mars Hill Church, the band has recently undergone a name change as well as a strengthening of direction and focus. Their latest offering certainly shows a maturing in their sound and an increased ability to create beautiful songs that are singable by ordinary folk in a congregation as well as accessible across generations. The recording is predominantly a collection of soaring anthems although there are moments of stillness and quiet that creates an effective ebb and flow to the album. It kicks off with the foot stomping "The Strife Is Over" that is a joyous celebration of salvation and freedom. Their dynamic re-arrangement of the old hymn "There Is A Fountain" is well worth a listen and I particularly enjoyed the funky bass line in "The Mighty Hand Of God". The band has also included an ambitious song "The Gospel" that preaches the basics of the gospel within a few short bars, and does so quite effectively. The powerful vocals of lead singer and frontman Zach Bolen pack a punch. Drawing on a variety of genres and musical styles and using a myriad of amazing synth and keyboard effects, Citizens & Saints have created a top quality project.
