This release is the first from the Christian star of the 11th series of American Idol. It was almost a year in the making. Dixon brought something new to the American Idol format with his amazing piano skills, quirky blonde Mohawk and his love for the Lord. Although lyrically the Bible references aren't obvious, you can still get a sense of whom Dixon is singing about, and can see a theme of redemption and God's love. The title of the album is taken from the Bible passage John 13:16. However, considering the wide range of styles shown by Colton on American Idol, I was expecting a similar display here; unfortunately most of the songs on the album do sound very alike and almost blur into one another. Although his voice is perfect for the pop rock genre that he, or his producers, picked for the album it is all a tad stereotypical. The album features "Never Gone", an original song which he performed on the Idol tour and his second single but the song that stands out is "Scars". With a stripped-down intro featuring just voice and piano it builds to a powerful climax. The cover art of the album creates the impression, with Colton's Billy Idol-style looks, that you're going to get something raw and more exciting than is actually delivered. But this is still a reasonable introduction to an above average singing talent.

Product Description
American Idol's Season 11 finalist Colton Dixon's powerful and iconic voice quickly earned him a loyal and enthusiastic fan following among the shows 20 million viewers that kept him from placing in the bottom three until his last week in the competition. Following a shocking early elimination, Colton hit the road with the other Idol finalists for the American Idol LIVE! Tour, where he performed in front of over 360,000 fans across the country.
Colton's musical journey has been a long time in the making, beginning with piano lessons at seven years old. A lifelong fan of Christian music, Colton remembers his first concert at age 13 performing I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe. That's when he knew he had found his calling. With a humble spirit, Colton answers the call, to be a messenger for a purpose greater than himself. His début album, A Messenger, carries that message of hope and God's unyielding love to a massive audience eager to hear it.
