Colton Dixon came into the public's consciousness in 2012 when he appeared in season eleven of American Idol and placed seventh in the competition. 'Identity' is his fourth album release since then and is a conceptual record focusing on the three parts of man - the mind, the body, and the spirit - shown by the three instrumental tracks, titled as such, that separate the album into three sections. With clear musical influences and similarities to The 1975, Paramore and Jesse McCartney, it would be easy to criticize Dixon for not taking greater musical risks instead of keeping it safe with his upbeat, electronic sound and radio-ready, catchy tunes. However it is also these ingredients that make this album so easily accessible to the average listener, even if it never manages to completely rock your world. The journey of identity that Dixon takes you on lyrically, both as an individual and also corporately as the church, will leave you feeling encouraged and revitalized in faith. "Autopsy" closes out the album as one of the standout tracks with a beautiful piano ballad accompanied by Dixon's falsetto. With a slight feel of the soundtrack to the Netflix series Stranger Things, "In My Veins" is another strong and anthemic song with some great musical hooks.
