Toronto-based rapper DIE-REK's debut album on the Illect label is a fine slice of low-key hip-hop which refuses to dodge the big issues in terms of faith and life in general. For instance, people who have made the ultimate sacrifice are acknowledged in the title track whilst "I Neva Knew" tackles the difficulties many men have in opening up about their problems with a hint of regret that showcases the Canadian emcee's innate ability to highlight his own shortcomings whilst offering up a modicum of the hope found in Jesus. Elsewhere, the likes of "Praises Of Men" deals with finding our identity in the opinions of others whilst "I'm So Potential" is a fascinating insight into our man's walk with God and, in particular, the need to wait on the Lord. DIE-REK's laidback rhymes sit on top of a bed of unfussy electro loops to good effect and a handful of guest artists including Rel McCoy, DJ Versatile and Karen Jewels join the party near the end of this satisfyingly intelligent release.
