Having never gained my antlers as a moosketeer, I've always been an outsider looking in puzzling as to what it was that gained Tribe Of Dan such a cult following. But now with this solo from head moose, sanctified loony and impassioned singer/songwriter all is at last becoming clear. With his singer/songwriter all is at last becoming clear. With notorious voice, cracked and wheezing enough to be singing blues on a Mississippi back porch, excellent, skeletal accompaniments from Lies Damned Lies and a doomy, droning feel the whole thing scans the dark side of the soul. Images are accompaniments from Lies Damned Lies and a doomy, droning feel, the whole thing scans the dark side of the soul. Images are dense, often bleak and seldom, if ever, spelt out. CCM buffs will despair of Dan's determination to keep his faith, a mere light flickering in a swirling vortex of thoughts and feelings, some of which even he would be hard put to explain. Great art? Inarticulate indulgence? I can't say I'm sure but there's something here that will keep me coming back.
