The son of a Methodist preacher, Dan Zimmerman has been playing guitar for over half a century. His influences include many of the rock and roll artists of the '50s and '60s, and appropriately enough, given that they share a surname, Bob Dylan. In the 1980s Dan formed a band Subterranean Café which released three albums. In the 1990s he met up with Daniel Smith of the cult following collective Danielson. In the 21st century Zimmerman has released a run of solo albums, this being his third. The first few unaccompanied words ("prepare for war") of the opening title track strangely remind me of Burl Ives and the vocal throughout is deep, at times at a whisper, sometimes a growl. It is certainly a listenable if unspectacular set of 13 songs. The title of the penultimate track "Steady Plodder" seems quite appropriate given the whole style of delivery. 'Cosmic Patriot' is not going to set the world alight, but check out the clips on the artist's MySpace page if you think this kind of rootsy neo-folk is your musical bag.
