In some ways Daniel O'Donnell has taken over from Cliff Richard as the artist vilified by music critics but whose chart success cocks a snoot at all those self-appointed protectors of cool. Daniel's success is phenomenal of course, 18 chart singles and six UK Top Ten albums since 2000. Now the Irish crooner has a new string to his bow. Daniel's new album 'Until The Next Time', of which this is a taster, is the first time he has written (or co-written) all the songs. And though no one would claim "Crush On You" shows Mr O'Donnell to be another McCartney or Simon, it is a catchy pop confection, nicely arranged and sung with warmth by the artist now seeking to be called a singer/songwriter. We await the album with interest.

I've heard the album, it's nice to listen to, there's some
good poppy sounds, plenty of his trademark MOR easy
listening, and even some pseudo-spiritual stuff a la 'Wind
Beneath My Wings'. Daniel's fans will like it, but there's
nothing that will make the playlist on Christian radio. As
to whether he can write a song, the jury's out.
