Here's a fascinating release for Sammy Horner's legion of followers to search out. Although issued in 2008 many Horner followers won't be aware of 'Tunes From The Dark Side' particularly as it contains material light years away joyful celebrations of 'Celtic Praise'. This is alt country at its most sombre, think Will Oldham but more so, with the gravelly voiced Ulsterman exploring tales of murder, violence, loneliness and despair. Sammy has a particularly clever way with lyrics and the accompanying band here play with relish with some of the reverb-drenched guitar being particularly outstanding. If you've a taste for Johnny Cash murder songs or the kind of story material which has long been part and parcel of UK and American folk traditions this fine album will be the perfect accompaniment to your darker moments.
