A really promising new talent from Southern Brazil, Dayana is booked to sing in the Performance Café at the Greenbelt Festival this August. Try and get there. I have to say straight away that this, Dayana's second album, is all in Portuguese. The 11 songs here are all written by the singer and I love the feel of the album. She is deeply influenced by her home dance rhythms of bossa nova and samba which permeate the songs. There are also plenty of pop, cabaret and rock flavourings as well. Her rich contralto is attractively deep, exuding an intimate quality, ably complemented by the deft arrangements from her band. It seems Dayana has had the trauma of seeing her husband diagnosed with cancer then wonderfully healed and these experiences led directly to this album. The title track is a really strong song, building nicely into a classic rock guitar break while the joyful Latin rhythms of "Gloria Ao Cordeiro" are possibly my favourite.
