One of the main problems with soul/gospel is that there's just too much of it around. Consequently, any new addition to the catalogue has to be good enough to make an impact, and unfortunately, this doesn't. That's not to say that DeBette hasn't got a quality voice; it's just that the material and instrumentation don't really do it justice. Remixes and guest vocalists abound, but at the end of the day, 'Walk On Gold' is just another run-of-the-mill R&B gospel album. Pity.
