Buxtehude was a Danish musician who became a leading figure in the organ music of North Germany in the generation before Bach. Indeed, Buxtehude may be counted as one who influenced the great man and his circle who copied and circulated his music. This is his third volume to be included in the excellent Organ Encyclopedia series and it includes free preludes as well as preludes based on familiar Lutheran chorales such as “Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott”. The organist is Professor Wolfgang Rübsam who is playing the Brombaugh Organ in the Central Lutheran Church, Eugene, Oregon. Your reviewer is no organist but he can report that the sound quality is very clear, the instrument has a lovely tone and the music is melodic throughout. At the usual Naxos price of less than five pounds this is well worth investigating.
