When Florida-based vocalist Chris Staples was fronting the band TwoThirtyEight they played a form of generic modern rock not dissimilar to PlankEye. Now he's come with this quirky item under the Discover America moniker and it's a long way from his old sound. Jangly, angular rock with some strong R&B influences, occasional low fi hip-hop beats and some surreal carnival style melodies make for an eccentric and intriguing album. There is a song about childhood, a song about the afterlife and quite a few numbers about the ups and downs of relationships. A left of centre album which some might find dull and pretentious but others will find crisply original in its determination not to follow current trends. 'Psychology' deserves investigation.
