First impression of this hot black gospel set, recorded live in Detroit, is of a competent vocalist getting himself swamped by a super-rocking choir of 60 voices sounding as if any one of them could blow Doug off the stage single handed. Not to minimise Miller's traditional fervour and growling, fiery vocal technique, but he ain't where the powder keg threatens to blow the place apart any time now. The pace slows for "The Lord Just Keeps On Blessing Me", allowing D.M. to ease into a soulful vein. He seems more comfy with extra space to breathe and judging by the choir's hollering, the song hit the button on the night O.K. "My Soul Has Been Anchored" is a gem - great call and response effect here in classic style. The album highlight features a duet with the Queen of gospel, on the title track. Rampaging choir too, on an all out celebration of the Devil's defeat. The pop/praise "Gratitude" eases back into a midnight hour meditation slightly below par by comparison but leading to the street brassy attack of "On The Battlefield" and the worshipful closer "Bless His Name". A generous slab of rich black gospel sounds.
