For many years now Doyle Lawson has been pursuing a unique path in bluegrass, the leader of an acclaimed band playing gospel music almost exclusively! Indeed, such is the esteem they are held in, that some years ago they were even invited to Britain to headline the Edale Bluegrass Festival which takes place every year in the Yorkshire dales. Gospel music has always been an integral part of bluegrass (as well as mainstream country music), but despite a rich tradition to call on, this is all basically new and very good material. The title track is co-written by Carlene Carter (daughter-in-law of Johnny Cash), but most of the rest of the songs are self written by Doyle and his band. There are some fine songs here. "The Crossroad" is the sort of material that Bill Monroe or the Stanley Brothers at their best would do. "Power In His Name" and "The Golden Hills Ahead" are strong titles. But if I had to pick a favourite I would go for "The Hills Of Glory", which is possibly even better than the title track, and the closer "On The Other Side". To sum up, a really excellent album, and it is really encouraging to have such a top notch bluegrass group playing gospel on a full time basis!
