Memphis-raised Americana artist Drew Holcomb has once again teamed up with his backing band the Neighbors to offer up a hugely engaging set of country-tinged songs that find all involved at the top of their game. Now on the Cross Rhythms radio playlist, the stomping opener "Family" sets the tone for an album which sees Holcomb referencing loved ones left, right and centre with "But I'll Never Forget The Way You Make Me Feel" being an apologetic love letter to his wife and fellow singer/songwriter Ellie (who also appears on the track) whilst the title track is a country waltz which features the ghost of his grandpa giving out some sage advice. Elsewhere, "See The World" is an affectionate ode to his young child but the undoubted highlight of this life-affirming piece is the laid bare "You Never Leave My Heart" which finds Holcomb recalling his younger brother's death some 20 years ago with an achingly candid vocal performance that will simply take your breath away - not to mention the Neighbors giving it all they've got in a way that sounds like they're giving their leader emotional as well as musical support. Occasionally, things drift into formulaic Americana mode with the likes of the Lori McKenna co-write "Make It Look So Easy" sounding like it's all been done before but this doesn't take away from the high standard of material found elsewhere on this gratifyingly good Billboard number one album.
