It has taken Cross Rhythms a few years to catch up with the idiosyncratically talented Edwige (which I'm told is pronounced Ed-u-eez) which is surprising as this delightful young lady has been making some of the most eclectically original music, all of it inspired by her strong Christian faith. One reviewer described Edwige's voice as "unorthodox and uneasily captivating. . .zooming and dodging like a brilliant coloured, elusive dragonfly over her baroque, mystical songs" which is probably as close as you're going to get in capturing her style. The singer/songwriter mixes the eeriest of harmonies, the most stratospheric of high notes and a hybrid sound that takes Clannad-like folk, velvety jazz emoting and Bjork-style improvisations accompanied by delicate acoustic guitar interwoven with keyboard sounds and occasional cello and violin. Edwige's songs too are starkly original. This album, her fourth, was released in 2011 and explores various biblical themes ranging from relatively simple observations that "it's Lonely Without Jesus" to opaque reflections on Ezekiel's mysterious vision of the wheels within wheels ("That Great City"). The title of the album emanates from Revelation 14 where "the fourth angel comes with a loud cry to tell the whole world". All in all, whatever this album lacks in accessibility it makes up in its unrelenting musical daring.
