Got to confess that the Rimmer jury is still out about whether one can really call Elvis Presley a Christian but I can't dispute that he loved his mama, had a generous heart, was brought up in church and loved in private to sing spiritual music. That's all given! This DVD tracks Elvis's life and love of gospel, talking to friends who knew him well and showing many clips from performances. In the documentary there is a load of speculation about Elvis's faith and attention is paid to the spiritual music he recorded. There are interviews with plenty of gospel musicians who share their stories of Elvis's private life. It makes fascinating watching and although I'd like to have some more complete performances of songs, this is entertaining and informative. After watching, I'm still not convinced that his faith is anything beyond that of a church-going Southern boy caught in religious culture but he left behind some fine gospel songs for us to enjoy.
