One of the bands that caused a stir at the Cross Rhythms Roots And Branches festival this year, were the unbilled and unexpected visitors from South Africa, Eminent Child who impressed those who caught their set. This album doesn't quite capture the current power of the band's live performances, as it was recorded three years ago and all bands grow and develop. However, it's a good introduction to one of South Africa's most popular rock gospel teams, who spent the summer of '99 in the UK making friends and also playing at Soul Survivor. Acoustic driven, tuneful, tight harmonies, catchy songs - this has got the lot. Standouts for me include the gorgeous "Bourbon Sky" with its strong vibe and the rock'n'roll rifforama of "Bright Green Day". Quite a contrast really! Oh yeah, and the guys even sing a song for their mum, proving that even rockers have a heart! Seriously though, they're young and talented and part of the new wave of South African music currently making an impression in the UK, Eminent Child's debut suggests a strong future.
