I've lost count of the times I've had the pleasure of bumping into Paul Cudby and friends at previous Cross Rhythms festivals, and a soft spot still remains in this ageing heart for their previous musical incarnation, 'Ascent'. Their subsequent brave, and radical, change of musical direction reflects the lyrical and poetic talents of lead singer, Alison Cudby, wife of the aforesaid Paul. Literally, and metaphorically, inspired by God's staggering creation, 'Quiet Earth And Shining Stars' contains some amazing imagery that stands well above many a crass pop phrase. Each track is littered with a gentle, yet unpretentious, intelligence that seeps deep into the spirit and soul. "Shafts of glory strike the earth and Heaven finds its birth/Our God wrapped in woman's blood" illustrates the awesome nature of God's creation personified in Jesus. An album that requires several plays to appreciate the string of lyrical pearls: couple this with some electrifying guitar swoops from talented lead man, Paul A Davies and this is an album of infectious quality you'll either love or hate, depending upon your predilection for folk/roots music. Try it and see.
