Some of the most widely known works have come from the pen of Tchaikovsky, the "1812 Overture", "The Nutcracker" and "Romeo And Juliet" and he is known for his remarkable use of nothing more or less complicated than rising and descending scales. His gift for melody though has earned him his place amongst the great composers of the late 19th century and this disc is a delightful cross section of the Russian composers work from the heavy (1812) to the lyrical (Symphony No 6 "Pathetique"), all recorded by great orchestras, the Dallas Symphony and Berlin Festival to name but two.
