Emerging out of the dust of 7th Angel and Detritus comes a refreshingly unique musical hybrid, the likes of which I have not had the pleasure of experiencing until now. 'Swings & Roundabouts' features Simon Bibby (ex-7th Angel on lead vocals/guitars), Mark Broomhead (ex-Detritus on bass), Scott James (keys) and drummer Adam. Gallagher, Firefly's sound can only best be described as indie progressive rock. All five of these compositions have been fascinatingly arranged in such a way as to engage and maintain the listener's attention where often times of broad harsh rhythms subside into near oblivion, as delicate passages of keyboard take their place, only to climax once again into a mass of brutality heavy guitars leaving at least this listener amazed and wanting more. Stand out cuts have to be 'Crowded Room', a contemplative song concerned with life's meaning set to an eclectic musical score, ranging from broad sweeping soundscapes to passages of intense metal grinding, complete with saxophone courtesy of Kevin Brown (Beautiful South); and 'Angry Aagin', an ambitious wall of sound that incorporates some creative keyboard playing by Scott James. Self produced, 'Swings...' is not only a stunning debt in and of itself, but yet another fine example of the UK's growing indie Christian rock music scene.
