Fletch Wiley is a brass player of some calibre who has produced some particularly fine original instrumental albums over the past few years and which have been favourably reviewed in this magazine. This latest offering is slightly different, or rather slightly predictable, a collection of favourite worship choruses from the last two decades newly arranged and featuring Fletch on trumpet, flugel and flute. The album's sub-title is 'Instrumental Solos For Praise And Wroship' and the tracks are certainly gently uplifting, with the arrangements allowing the melodies to speak clearly, reminding one of the words of the songs. My favourite is the simple rendering of "As The Deer Pants For The Water". However, on previous albums Fletch Wiley has demonstrated a real prophetic cutting edge to his music, speaking of current Kingdom issues. In this respect 'Lift High The Lord' is disappointing and an example, though good, of what any Christian recording company can and does produce for the popular market. For me this man's talent is in his original work, which allows his spirituality to communicate through his prophetic improvisatory playing. I look forward to more from Fletch Wiley in that vein.
