Reviewed by Jon Cooper This is the third Flight School EP and, in the band's own words, "has been far too long in the making". Still, on the evidence of 'You Cut The Line', it sounds like the time between releases was used effectively. Opener "The First Thing" announces the band's intentions, bouncing along like jam between Foals and Franz Ferdinand, before "You Cut The Line", with its dreamy acoustic guitar and chilled-out drum loop, takes the listener into the kind of anthemic, simple songwriting territory occupied by the likes of Snow Patrol. "Rabbit Hole" sounds like Shearwater's more purposeful, driving tracks, with its awkward, angular guitar and shimmering strings, and lilting closer "Me, Jools And Your Suitcase" is pure Death Cab For Cutie, right down the opening lyric about the New Year. The listener could be forgiven for thinking that this is a band with more than three members thanks to clever instrumental and vocal layering, and the numerous musical references will form touchstones for fans of a wide range of artists. An accessible, interesting release, which will hopefully add momentum to Flight School's journey into the spotlight.
